4 days in Lisbon, including a day in Sintra
A first-visit plan that gives Lisbon’s hills, riverside neighborhoods and Sintra room to breathe.
The route at a glance
| Day | Area | Keep it manageable |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Baixa and Alfama | Choose a direction through the hills and leave time for breaks. |
| 2 | Belém and the riverside | Choose one major interior visit. |
| 3 | Sintra | Anchor the day around one confirmed palace visit. |
| 4 | Chiado and a flexible city afternoon | Leave room for a favorite area or a departure buffer. |
Day 1: Baixa and Alfama, with space for the hills
Start with the lower central streets around Baixa before continuing toward Alfama. Keep the first day focused on getting oriented: a few neighborhood streets, a long lunch and a viewpoint are enough. Decide whether you want to climb gradually or take transport toward a higher starting point and walk back down.
Put a castle visit in the main afternoon block only if it is one of your priorities. Otherwise, leave the time for exploring at your own pace. The point of this route is to avoid crisscrossing the hills repeatedly for individual sights. Portugal’s official Lisbon overview is a useful introduction to Alfama, Castelo and Belém before you choose your stops.
Keep dinner close to where you finish. If you want a fado evening, check the venue’s own booking details and make that the evening’s main activity rather than squeezing it between more sightseeing.
Day 2: give Belém a separate outing
Travel to Belém for a morning centered on the riverside and its monuments. Choose one interior visit that matters most to you and check its official availability. Enjoy the surrounding area even if another monument is closed or tickets are unavailable; a good day should not depend on entering every building.
Leave time for a pastry stop and an unhurried lunch. Then choose between more time along the river and returning toward central Lisbon. Avoid adding Sintra to this day: it introduces another substantial transfer and a second set of timed-entry constraints. If you want a museum afternoon, make it an alternative to additional sightseeing rather than another obligation.
Day 3: Sintra, planned around one reservation
Make Sintra a full-day outing. If Pena Palace is your priority, begin with the official Parques de Sintra visitor page. Palace tickets are tied to a date and time; allow for the journey to Sintra and the onward trip to the palace before choosing a slot.
Do not treat arrival at Sintra station as arrival at the palace. The operator lists public transport options and notes that private vehicles are not authorized to access the monument. Check the current arrangements and allow a buffer rather than building the day around a tight connection.
After your main visit, take a proper lunch break and decide whether you want more park time or the town center. Adding a second major monument is optional, not the default. If you want extensive gardens, photography stops or a slower pace, one main visit can fill the day comfortably. Return to Lisbon with the evening uncommitted.
Day 4: Chiado and time to revisit a favorite
Spend the morning around Chiado, keeping space for cafés, shops or one cultural stop. Use the afternoon to return to a neighborhood you enjoyed, replace a weather-affected part of an earlier day, or choose a museum you intentionally left out.
If this is your departure day, shorten the plan. Work backward from your flight or train, adding packing, baggage collection and the journey to the terminal. A flexible final afternoon is more useful than one last reservation that puts the whole departure under pressure.
Before you set your dates
- Choose the timed visit first. Secure your priority reservation before fitting flexible neighborhood days around it.
- Check transport at the source. Use CP for rail information and Carris for Lisbon bus and tram information. Confirm current service rather than relying on an old timetable.
- Budget by category. Separate accommodation, meals, local journeys, the Sintra transfer and admissions. Add only the attractions you actually plan to enter.
- Respect the terrain. Hills, steps and uneven surfaces can change how much fits into a day. Check venue accessibility information when that matters to your group.
